This week has been eventful and full of surprises. From late nights to snow, it’s been completely unpredictable.
On Tuesday, some friends and I saw one of our favorite bands, Bowerbirds. They were amazing and blew me away. We invited them to visit the brewery after for a tour and tasting and they all came. I love opportunities to spend time with people who you admire. They were so humble and friendly, and we were excited to share Bryan’s passion with them. If you have not listened to them, please please do yourself a favor and go listen right now.
During the making of their latest album, they also made this video which really shows a unique view into their lives.
This weekend marks one of my favorite times of year, Halloween. I am pretty excited about my costume this year and actually have the option to dress up twice this weekend. I am going to be one of my teenage heroes, Daria.
While it’s cold here, I am so looking forward to a marvelous weekend.
For those who don’t know, my husband, Bryan Leavelle, and his friends have started a brewery here in Denver called Our Mutual Friend. We all have been anticipating the opening for months and there is really something to be said about their dedication and process. I sent Bryan some of the most frequently asked questions that I hear.
1. Why beer?
BECAUSE OF YOU! I had been getting into craft beer for a couple of years, and one day when I was on tour you told me that you bought me a surprise: a one gallon brew kit. I made that batch as soon as I got home, and loved the process. Then, I got into learning about the history of beer, and I really enjoy doing something that has been a part of human culture since the day we decided it would be better to stay in one spot and farm then roam around collecting berries and hunting.
2. How did you and partners pick the name “Our Mutual Friend?”
Brandon came up with the name, because we loved how beer has always been a sort of “mutual friend” that brings people together. You meet people at bars, randomly around the city while talking about beer, at events, and while home brewing. Its a fun, positive subject that just makes people happy and want to talk to people.
3. What are some of your favorite beers?
Favorite beers… there are so many! Off the top of my head… Arrogant Bastard by Stone Brewing, Torpedo by Sierra Nevada, Raging Bitch by Flying Dog and Upslope Brown Ale are probably in the top spots. Oh, and BPR from River North.
4. What do you love about Denver?
Denver is the best city in the world. The people are amazing, the beer culture can’t be beat, and the weather is beautiful. Great food, great local businesses and of course, I love my friends.
5. What other breweries in Denver do you like to visit?
my favorite brewery to visit. Matt Hess is a great guy making outstanding beer. Its always laid back, its close to OMF, and there is always something new and interesting to try. Witt’s End is great too, although I definitely don’t make it out there enough. The New Belgium tour is always a fun way to kill a few hours and get drunk while looking at amazing equipment and drinking great beer.
6. What are you the most excited about?
Besides getting our final city BS worked out, Im just excited to be bringing something new to the brewing world. Roasting grain in house is something that is pretty unheard of, and I am looking forward to seeing how people respond. I’m also excited to start coming up with more interesting roasts; the sky is pretty much the limit and we can make new grains that can’t be bought from a distributor.
7. What’s next?
Malting. With the amount of time it took for us to get our city stuff worked out, we weren’t able to work on getting our malting rig finalized. Hopefully by early next year we will have our plans done and it will be ready to be built!
8. FINALLY… when are you going to open?!
I’ll say the same thing I always say… SOON.

Last week my close friend Kate from from my hometown (Hemet, CA) moved to Denver. She took a huge leap of faith and just came out without ever visiting. So much courage! She happened to arrive the day before one of the gatherings at Our Mutual Friend for the Beer Appreciation Society kick-off event. It was
Recently, Bryan, Andrew and Brandon of Our Mutual Friend Malt & Brew were photographed by Sean Buchan of Denver off the Wagon. There’s a great mention of the Denver brewery on both the off the Wagon site and Sean’s blog, Beertographer. I love how we captured the mood and lighting inside the OMF tap room, and the personalities of all the guys.
They are still set on opening in August if everything goes according to plan. Here are some of the shots that give you a sneak peak before OMF Malt & Brew opens in Denver.
