For those who don’t know, my husband, Bryan Leavelle, and his friends have started a brewery here in Denver called Our Mutual Friend. We all have been anticipating the opening for months and there is really something to be said about their dedication and process. I sent Bryan some of the most frequently asked questions that I hear.
1. Why beer?
BECAUSE OF YOU! I had been getting into craft beer for a couple of years, and one day when I was on tour you told me that you bought me a surprise: a one gallon brew kit. I made that batch as soon as I got home, and loved the process. Then, I got into learning about the history of beer, and I really enjoy doing something that has been a part of human culture since the day we decided it would be better to stay in one spot and farm then roam around collecting berries and hunting.
2. How did you and partners pick the name “Our Mutual Friend?”
3. What are some of your favorite beers?
Favorite beers… there are so many! Off the top of my head… Arrogant Bastard by Stone Brewing, Torpedo by Sierra Nevada, Raging Bitch by Flying Dog and Upslope Brown Ale are probably in the top spots. Oh, and BPR from River North.

5. What other breweries in Denver do you like to visit?
River North is
my favorite brewery to visit. Matt Hess is a great guy making outstanding beer. Its always laid back, its close to OMF, and there is always something new and interesting to try. Witt’s End is great too, although I definitely don’t make it out there enough. The New Belgium tour is always a fun way to kill a few hours and get drunk while looking at amazing equipment and drinking great beer.
6. What are you the most excited about?
Besides getting our final city BS worked out, Im just excited to be bringing something new to the brewing world. Roasting grain in house is something that is pretty unheard of, and I am looking forward to seeing how people respond. I’m also excited to start coming up with more interesting roasts; the sky is pretty much the limit and we can make new grains that can’t be bought from a distributor.
7. What’s next?
Malting. With the amount of time it took for us to get our city stuff worked out, we weren’t able to work on getting our malting rig finalized. Hopefully by early next year we will have our plans done and it will be ready to be built!
8. FINALLY… when are you going to open?!
